We attended our first Northern Virginia Pug Meet this weekend. It was held at A Dog’s Day Out doggie daycare (www.adogsdayout.com) in Vienna, VA.
Plenty of smushed up noses, snorts, curly pig tails, and one lonely Shih Tzu! (That’s our dog, Murphy, the only non-pug that attended).
It was great to meet everyone!
*Some photos courtesy of proud pug owner, Dottie =)

Did you know that pets, just like people, can get the winter blues? Dogs, even those that live in warmer climates, are affected by changes in the season.
Lack of winter stimulation can result in your dog gaining weight, becoming irritable and sleeping too much.
Here are 5 tips to help you and your pet get through the cold winter months:
1) Brighten the lights
Dogs and cats respond to illumination like we do: they get peppier when the light is brighter. So even if it’s too cold to go out, open drapes and let in any sunlight there is, turn up indoor lights, and even replace bulbs to create a more day like environment.
2) Encourage play time
Dogs love to play! Even indoors, games like tug-of-war, chase, hide-n-seek and wrestling can mean a great workout while building their appetite.
3) Reduce food quantities.
Since your dog is not out as much, he or she doesn’t need to eat as much. Less food means less weight gain and more energy.
4) Enhance scents around the house.
Scented goodies keep dogs busy as they try to find the source of the smell. However, if you use scented candles, keep them out of reach.
5) Go outside.
Dogs would mostly likely welcome romping in the snow. If needed, use a long retractable leash to give them more freedom to play.

The Paw Pets Partners: Robert Shank & Ian White
ThingsForPups: So, who was the REAL mastermind behind Paw Pets?
Ian White: The real mastermind must be [my dog,] Leo… He’s the one who was able to make me want to play with him so much that I had to invent a toy… Without Leo I would have never thought up Paw Pets!
TFP: Was there a moment of inspiration behind the creation of Paw Pets, or was it an idea that evolved over time?
IW: It was a moment of inspiration. I couldn’t use my hand to play with Leo anymore because he was jumping at my hands and learning bad behaviors. I was on vacation with my girlfriend when I saw a puppet, one that wasn’t safe or strong enough to use playing with Leo, but I knew then that I had to have a puppet that I could use to play with and train Leo. I couldn’t find anything on the market so I got to work.
TFP: Who is more popular: Sharkiana or Crocobob? Do they get jealous of each other?
IW: Crocobob is more popular, but they are a tight crew and now with Hippolynne joining the group they are all-for-one-and-one-for-all… A “tripod” so to speak, need all three legs to stand!
TFP: Hippolynne will be debuting soon. Any predictions on how she’ll do?
IW: She, so far, looks to be the most popular Paw Pet… I think she will be big this Valentines day!
TFP: Any special Paw Pets events/promotions this Christmas you want us to know about?
IW: Macy’s Union Square (San Francisco): we sponsored a window with the SPCA and are giving away Paw Pets with all of the SPCA adopted puppies so that they can have Crocobob and Sharkiana by their side when they meet their new family. Then they can use Sharkiana and Crocobob to build relationships with and train their new humans!!!
TFP: What is the most common question or comment that customers have for you?
IW: “Is this really strong enough for my dog?” I answer- “I tested and built them for my 70-lb. pitbull/bulldog mix so I always say, yes, they are super tough and can be used to train your pet not to destroy toys!!!”
TFP: Lastly…Has anyone ever told you that Crocobob might actually be an alligator? (He has a short snout vs. the long, pointy one crocodiles have)
IW: Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, he might hear you!!!!! We are having a writing competition at local schools and they will be telling the true story so I won’t comment too much before we have all of the facts but I’d just say that Crocobob is the kind of guy that’s always full of smiles and full of surprises.
